 One Receiver Does It All

The world of digital broadcasting is not static - it demands flexibility and adaptability to meet the demands of the ever more rapid digital development, spectrum efficiency, new applications, and device features.

Over the years, the technology has been enhanced with complementary standards developed to facilitate the commercial launch of multimedia and video services. In this way, the standard has remained at the forefront of the digital broadcasting arena by incorporating not only audio, but also data.

DAB is unique that both audio and data services can be received using the same receivers. Since DMB uses the existing DAB infrastructure, DMB receivers can receive not only DMB video service and other available applications but also existing DAB audio and data services.

The common data services for DAB/DMB include DLS (Radiotext), Slideshow, Broadcast Web Site (limited internet like application), mobile TV (DMB only) and so on. Therefore, users are able to view the news headlines, traffic, weather, and graphics while listening to the audio service depending on which receiver you are using.

It is possible to receive DAB/DMB services on a wide range of receiving device including fixed, mobile and portable radio receivers with displays or screens including personal computers and some mobile phones. Other types of receivers also include: USB, digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players, pocket TVs, in-car radios and TV screens and many more.

DMB Will be Available Across South Korea In First Half Of 2007

Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) will be available across South Korea starting the first half of 2007. The service was launched by Korean broadcasters in late 2005, mainly in the Seoul metropolitan area. Through it, TV shows can be viewed for free on cell phones and other hand-held devices.
The Information and Communication Ministry of Korea has said it will select in February more regional broadcasters to offer T-DMB services. The expanded service will be offered in major cities starting in Mar 2007 and branch out nationwide by the end of Jun this year. Last year almost three million T-DMB handsets were sold in Korea.
